These days, traditional college recruitment programs may no longer appeal to the new generation of young professionals. They may not be so keen on visiting your in-campus booth or reading your classified ad. Companies need to adapt their recruitment techniques and strategies to ones that will be most relevant for millennials.

Here are 5 ways on how you can update your college recruiting program to get the best and brightest young professionals:

1. Be more personal

Millennials grew up with personalized ads on Facebook, automatically synced billing forms on retail sites and single sign-on features for websites and apps. For them, it is imperative that you know who they are and you should never generalize them as just a mere member of the “class of 2016.”
You can start with location-specific call-to-actions in emails or Facebook ads, such as targeting students in the San Francisco area for a recruitment event in that area. You can also make ads based on prospective students’ interests.

It’s always good to reach out to students on an individual level. The personal touch makes the prospective student want to apply to your company.

2. Boost your online presence

56% of millennials used a smartphone to search for and apply to U.S. colleges or universities. Potential new hires will most likely access your website on their phones so you should make sure that your website is mobile-friendly.

Additionally, this generation of young professionals are very active on social networking sites, so it is important to use your social media presence to reach them. Encourage prospective hires to “sign up to learn more” with their email, this will allow you to create a database of emails so you can follow-up with news about the company or new job openings.

3. Get testimonials

A UCLA study cited “to be able to get a better job” as the top reason why incoming freshmen attend college. For millennials, the ability to land a good job after college has become increasingly important.

Find employed alumni in your company and connect them with prospective students in their related field, so students can begin to visualize where a degree can lead them. You can create Facebook Live sessions where alumni can discuss their career path and day-to-day activities or a LinkedIn forum where alumni can interact with students.

4. Show how they can grow in your company

You can show aspiring young professionals how they can grow in your company in multiple ways through multiple outlets, including videos, infographics and articles distributed through YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, websites, and email.

Discuss special employee perks such as paid study leaves, special trainings, etc. so they can get an idea of their possible career trajectory in your company.

5. Tap the university network

The university network (faculty, admissions officers, current students and alumni) are key influencers with regards to which companies millennials will apply for a job.

You should identify particular faculty, students and alumni who will act as your “university ambassador” on social channels and on campus. These ambassadors can spread positive word of mouth about your company and generate student referrals. You can manage these referrals using Firstbird.
