Who Are The Referral Personas?

Although digital employee referral programs are among the most successful recruiting channels, many companies report different success rates. The purpose of our field study was to investigate and identify the key factors for a referral program’s success.

In our field research on employee referrals, over 35,000 user profiles of employees from companies across all industries were examined for their usage patterns and referral activities.

The results led to the discovery of four different types of users, each with a distinct usage pattern  that describes their motivation factors to refer and their impact on recruitment.

Find all about our referral personas below!

Power Users
  • Highly proactive participants of a referral program
  • Frequently share jobs on social media or establish direct contact to find suitable candidates
  • Have a strong impact on their networks, with the highest likelihood of generating views and applications
  • Motivation drivers: user-friendly referral process and monetary rewards paid out promptly
Strikers
  • Don't often engage with the program but have ultimate precision in their referral activity, frequently leading to a successful hire
  • Prefer more private and direct channels than business networking platforms
  • Although very cautious about sharing jobs on social platforms, they generate shares and views when they do share them
  • Motivation drivers: good feedback quality and speed accompanied by praise & appreciation for their commitment
Multiplicatiors
  • The most active ambassadors on the business networks and major contributors to the company's visibility on social media
  • Responsible for generating the majority of all shares and most of the views on social networks
  • Although sharing the jobs publicly and frequently, their success rate is low because their referrals are often not the right fit
  • Motivation drivers: rewards, both monetary and non-monetary
Cautious
  • Refer rarely and with a low success rate, but the quality of their referrals is higher than multiplicators' because they carefully select the referred candidates
  • They would rather not refer the candidates if the chances of them being hired are very low
  • Motivation drivers: Rewards and direct feedback are emphasized as motivation for them
