By gamify-ing the referral recruitment process, hiring becomes more interactive for referred candidates and current employees. Employees are rewarded for their participation and progress which keeps them engaged and eager to participate in the program.

Here are some ways on how you can integrate gamification into your employee referral strategy:

1. Make it easy

The mechanics must be simple enough to engage team members to get on board. At the end of the day, if your employees are finding your employee referral program too complicated, they will show less enthusiasm to participate.

Create a step-by-step guide for all employees that explains the rules, the game and processes, prizes, your recruitment process and the type of people you look for.

By clearly highlighting each step, you are allowing each employee to master the system and get involved.

2. Make it a multi-player game

Games are more fun when other people are playing too. Bring out the competitive side of your employees and create a leaderboard so everyone can keep tabs on each other’s performance.

You can even make the game bigger by inviting non-employees into your employee referral program. You can invite industry influencers, former employees, business partners and vendors to participate in the employee referral program.

3. Be creative with your prizes

Keep the game interesting by mixing things up a bit. You can swap and change the points system, have random raffles for people who have hit a certain points level or even have a power hour where they will get double points for the actions made within a certain time frame. If they’ve racked up a certain number of points, they can redeem restaurant vouchers, concert tickets or out-of-town getaways.

If you have a vacancy that’s hard to fill, you can offer special incentives for everyone who refers a qualified candidate for that position.

4. Encourage teamwork

You can create an inter-departmental or office location competition to encourage teamwork. The department or the office location that refers the most qualified candidates can win a collective reward from the company.

5. Acknowledge your staff and give people feedback

Feedback is one of the most important parts of the hiring process and the same goes for employee referrals. Employees won’t ‘play the game’ if they never hear anything from you again, after they’ve referred someone. By constantly giving feedback, you are encouraging further action to be taken by each member of your team.

A points system allows each employee to see exactly what they have done and that their action has been recognized. To keep everyone engaged and encourage everyone to participate, points should be rewarded based on effort.
